Creating an LGBTQ+ Inclusive Workplace (Panel)
Join our panel members as they help HR professionals and organizational leaders learn how to create inclusive environments for LGBTQ+ colleagues. Best practices in terms of colleague inclusion and engagement will be shared to implement in our workplaces. Since this is a panel, questions from the audience will also be answered; in our virtual presentation format, chat will be utilized to submit attendee questions in real time.
Panelist Willette A. Capers is the Chief Diversity Officer and Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Augustana University. As a trained Safe Zone Facilitator, Capers has years of experience leading talks, creating dialogues, and executing workshops geared at supporting the LGBTQIA+2S community. Capers has also created and implement university-wide planning through campus partnerships, to expand the cultural development and understanding of LGBTQIA+2S faculty,students, administrators and staff on campus. This includes collaborating with relevant university academic and administrative units to sponsor joint programs and advocacy activities that promote a learning environment with the goal of building a culture where all students feel safe, valued and included.
Panelist Kira Kimball serves as Chief Innovation Officer for Marsh & McLennan Agency, where her primary goal is to develop strategies to create an unfair competitive advantage for her firm and team. Talent development, internship programming, diversity & inclusion initiatives, culture-building and brand positioning are Kira’s energy drivers. She is passionate about the vibrancy of her firm's culture and believes it has everything to do with not only attracting, engaging and retaining high caliber talent, but also with growing business. She is a National Diversity Council Certified Diversity Professional and lead MMA’s national diversity & inclusion strategy team. Prior to joining the insurance industry she spent a decade in higher education teaching, advising and leading around diversity.
Panelist Darin Kaihoi is the CEO of Coffea Roasterie, a coffee company located in Sioux Falls, SD, operating four retail cafes, wholesale and consulting services, and roasting facility. Believing in its potential to elevate quality, connect people, and create ethical economic growth, Darin is passionate about the role of specialty coffee and excited to be part of a dynamic and progressive industry. During the five plus years that Darin has been involved in managing operations at Coffea, the company has grown from two to four cafes, introduced a wholesale line, expanded its roasting operation, and received recognition in publications such as Food & Wine. Over the course of that time, Darin has developed an understanding of how to build and maintain a healthy workplace culture that promotes inclusivity and shared values.
Panelist Cody Ingle has worked at The Center for Family Medicine as the IT/Application Support Specialist For the past year. He has helped the clinic in moving forward, including adding a “Safe Space for All” on the homepage of the website and bringing about conversations about pronoun usage. He has also worked with SDSU Nursing Students to create visibility for LGBTQ+ patients in healthcare settings and their needs. Cody has worked in downtown Sioux Falls for the past 4 years at a local bar. Cody has been on the board of Sioux Falls Pride for the past year, and has been involved with Pride for the past three years. He helped organize the first Pride Parade in Sioux Falls. He worked with the National Center for Transgender Equality during HB1057 (denying puberty blockers to minors). He also works with the community of Sioux Falls to help bring awareness to the need for visibility in the LGBTQ+ community—including speaking in high schools to students about the issue. Cody is passionate about advocacy work and creating visibility for the LGBTQ+ community—especially in the work place and in healthcare.
Moderator Colleen Moran is currently the Chief Operating Officer at Independent Living Choices (ILC), which is a non-profit organization that provides services to individuals with disabilities Prior to working for ILC, Colleen served as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Sioux Falls. In that capacity, her duties included managing the Human Relations Division, acting as the City’s ADA Coordinator, and providing legal guidance to the City. Colleen has also worked as a Deputy State’s Attorney at the Minnehaha County State’s Attorney’s Office and as a law clerk for the Chief Justice of the South Dakota Supreme Court.
