REINFORCING THE BASICS OF COMPENSATION
Presented by Alternative HR, LLC consultants Karen DeLange, Julie Nelson, Kayla Johnson, and Sarah Meusburger
Join us for our July presentation where we'll dive into compensation basics, including compensation philosophy, job classification, wage analysis, and compensation systems. Leading us through these important considerations are four SHRM certified HR Consultants who have been involved in evaluating compensation strategies and practices with clients in the private, public and non-profit sectors. They have conducted numerous compensation strategy sessions, analyzed dozens of jobs to help determine comparative worth and market value, and created scores of practical wage ranges and compensation systems for their clients.
The outline for our presenters and their presentation follows:
Compensation Philosophy (Karen DeLange) – key questions to ask, including:
- What are your organization’s goals and objectives with your compensation?
- What do your people and leaders describe your organization’s compensation philosophy?
- Where do you want to be positioned relative to other employers? How do you want to be perceived?
- How close are you? What must change? What can change?
Job Classification (Kayla Johnson) – how to classify and rank jobs within your organization
- Job review and analysis
- Comparing essential functions and responsibilities, qualifications and requirements
- Determining comparative values and relative worth
Wage Analysis (Sarah Meusburger) – how to find relevant external data
- Consider where to find similar jobs, or jobs with comparable values
- Looking at external data source (i.e. SESHRM Salary Survey, Labor Market Info, BLS.gov, etc.)
- Factors to consider, including age of information; combination jobs
Compensation Systems (Julie Nelson) – determining a system that fits your organization
- Simplicity/Complexity
- Establishing wage ranges
- Establishing guidelines and/or strict rules
- Achieving executive buy-in
