Disability Etiquette: Creating an Inclusive Workplace
This interactive session, led by an experienced disability inclusion expert, explores practical strategies for interacting effectively with people with various disabilities and provides an overview of the history and impact of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Participants will learn basic tips and best practices to reduce fear and uncertainty in communication, foster a more inclusive environment, and enhance workplace and societal engagement. The session combines real-world examples, actionable guidance, and opportunities for participants to practice respectful and confident interactions in diverse scenarios.
By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:
Explain the history and significance of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and its impact on workplace inclusion.
Recognize common misconceptions and barriers that exist when interacting with people with disabilities.
Apply practical disability etiquette strategies to enhance communication and inclusion in the workplace.
Identify specific behaviors and language choices that create a respectful and supportive environment.
Develop a personal action plan for implementing disability-inclusive practices in their own workplace or community.
Vicki Stewart is the Executive Director of Employment Disability Resources in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She holds a B.A. in Religion with a minor in Psychology from Augustana University and brings over 30 years of experience in the field of disabilities. Vicki serves on numerous boards, including the Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce, Sioux Empire United Way, Levitt at the Falls, the State Board of Vocational Rehabilitation, and the SHRM State Council. She is a WINDMILLS: Changing the Perception of Abilities certified trainer and is dedicated to promoting inclusive workplaces and empowering individuals with disabilities.
