Legal Updates for HR Professionals
Join SE SHRM for our June 2026 chapter meeting featuring Brooke N. Schmidt of Davenport, Evans, Hurwitz & Smith, LLP. Brooke will provide timely legal updates relevant to HR professionals and organizational leaders, focusing on employment law developments, compliance considerations, and practical takeaways for managing workplace issues.
This session will help SE SHRM members stay informed about current legal trends impacting employers, including employee benefits, harassment and discrimination, wrongful termination, wage and hour issues under the Fair Labor Standards Act, and leave matters under the Family and Medical Leave Act. Brooke will also share guidance to help HR professionals identify potential risks and support sound decision-making within their organizations.
Brooke N. Schmidt is an associate attorney with Davenport, Evans, Hurwitz & Smith, LLP. She joined the firm in 2021 and focuses on employment law, counseling clients on matters involving employee benefits, harassment, discrimination, wrongful termination, the Fair Labor Standards Act, and the Family and Medical Leave Act. She is also a member of the firm’s Transactions and General Business practice group. Brooke is a native of Aberdeen, South Dakota, and earned her undergraduate degree from the University of South Dakota, magna cum laude, before receiving her Juris Doctor from Washburn University School of Law.
Brooke is active in the Sioux Falls community and has been involved with organizations including the South Dakota Bar Association, Sioux Empire Teen Court, Sioux Falls Thrive, and Leadership Sioux Falls
