Congress passes bill to make Juneteenth as a federal holiday

The United States will soon have a new federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery.

The House voted 415-14 on June 16, 2021 to make Juneteenth, or June 19th, the 12th federal holiday. The bill now goes to President Joe Biden’s desk, and he is expected to sign it into law.

    President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act on 6/17/21, establishing June 19 as a federal holiday.

    Most federal employees will have tomorrow, June 18 off for observance as June 19 falls on a Saturday this year.
